West Tennessee Strawberry Festival Open Checker Tournament, his seventh time winning this title. Congratulations! To John Estes of Rockvale, TN as the 2013 West Tennessee Strawberry Festival Open Majors Checker Tournament Champion. Congratulations! To Curtis Leggett of Bells, TN	as the 2013 West Tennessee Strawberry Festival Open Minors Checker Tournament Champion. GM stands for Grand	Master, IM for International Master, and CM for Candidate Master, which are earned titles given by WCDF to distinguish players. ACF Rating - Ratings supplied by ICH Checkers www.icheckers.net ratings processor
icheckers ratings. "T" separates player's opponent from player's round game points: Draw is 1, Win is 2 points, Bye is 3, and Forfeit is 4. In the 8:00am business meeting, Larry Keen, Director of West Tennessee Strawberry Festival Open Checker	Tournament welcomed 29 players from	10 States: 9 from TN; 7 from KY; 3 from IL, 2 from MO, NC, and OH; 1 each
from AL, LA, MS, and WV.  This group of players included 7 State Champions, a Grand Master, 2 International Masters, 1 Candidate Master, and the 3-Move / 11-Man World Champion.  Mr. Davis call these players' names and recognized their accomplishment in checkers, and
also mentioned Bryce Morville who recently won the MO State 3-Move Tournament and now the current Illinois State Champion. Larry Keen also introduced the Regions Bank Manager, Ms. Clarkie Graham who gave a warm welcome to all the checker players.  We especially appreciate her
welcome visit and allowing us to use the Regions Bank main street building second floor for our venue. Larry Keen allowed several players to speak, including Jimmy Reilford who talk about a TV production “Backyard Oil Barons” which features Jimmy Reliford who owns Jimmy Reliford Drilling Company in Columbia, KY.  They are filming Jimmy Reliford and some of the
other drilling companies in the area. The Tennessee Open was filmed because	it was part of some of the activities Reliford enjoys.  These episodes are shown Friday evenings on the Discovery Channel after “Deadliest
Catch.”  The “Backyard Oil Barons” may replace “Deadliest Catch” if their ratings dictate its popularity, so Jimmy said, “To keep watching it!” John Acker & Alex Moiseyev spoke about the upcoming Moiseyev v Borghetti 3-Move WTM in June 26 - July 7 in Livorno, Italy.  They used a "hat donation" method for "Alex & John Travel Fund"
(actually a plastic grocery bag) for transportation expanses and trip to Livorno.  Alex posted on the ACF forum under Strawberry Tournament, “We collected $417 !!!  Many, many thanks to everyone (almost all players gave
something) who supported me, John and World Title Match. For me this donation is not only tremendous financial help, but also great moral support and stimulation.”

JR Smith plugged the upcoming NC State Open
which will be held next weekend on May 17th & 18th in Greensboro, NC. John Acker announced the upcoming ACF National GAYP in Cincinnati, OH to be held in July 29th though August 3rd.  John was asking for players to pre-register and complete a pre-registration
forms and also donations to the prize fund which several players participated by enrolling and giving to the fund. It was announced “King Me” a checker documentary about King & Lubabalo is now available on
    iTunes!

You can download it for $9.99
King Me itunes.apple.com Watch the trailer and download King Me 2012 on iTunes Larry turned the meeting over to Frank Davis our tournament director and referee who praised Larry for an outstanding job with planning and organizing this tournament. Frank acknowledge the tremendous effort Larry Keen puts into acquiring nice door prizes and the excellent salesmanship used in procuring a large tournament prize fund. Strawberry Festival attendance looked a little down this year... perhaps due to rain and possibly an anticipated Boston bombing threats.  Several of us saw National Guards with weapons
on the street.  We all agree their presents was fantastic!  I also noticed a lot more Tennessee State Troopers.  I was carefully not to speed coming from Jackson into Humboldt, they were sitting everywhere!  There
was less businesses and residents participation this time in the parades.  Our Checker Tournament attendance was ok; however, we always want more entries.  29 Players compared to 27 in 2012, 37 in 2011, 29 in
2010, 17 in 2009, 29 in 2008, 30 in 2007, 23 in 2006, and 22 in 2005. Larry Pollard and I were roommates Thursday night but he had a business situation he needed to take care of and left Friday morning, if he had played it would have made 30 participants. It rained hard Friday Morning from 8:30 - 10:00am, knocking off the lights and the A/C, for a short time, we were considering making other arrangements for the playing
room which we were using the second floor of the main street branch of Regions Bank's conference room. Frank recognized Larry Keen for the excellent job in gathering up plenty of door prizes supplied by numerous local Humboldt merchants, and
the Regions Bank. We appreciate the merchandise for door prizes and arranging a lots of restaurant discounts &
coupons for the tournament. Players' names are randomly drawn from a hat until all door prizes are given out. Many players expressed their appreciation for this well run tournament with a large prize fund and plenty of door prizes. Frank Davis covered the tournament schedule and playing rules with emphases on how we would play our 7 two and half hour rounds as 4 rounds Friday and 3 rounds Saturday.  Frank
also explained how over-time games would be handled (Posted Rules).
If the game is not completed on time, then a move per minute for 10 minutes, if the move per minute does not create a decision, then the referee (Frank Davis) will make a decision for the results.  Masters may agree to use
a computer to make a decision with the provision of a score value of 60 points for a win using the KingsRow program. John Acker spoke about using clocks to finish over-time games. He suggested setting a move a minute then reducing to seconds, when time runs out that player loses. Alex Moiseyev
also spoke about using computer analysis, saying he was playing a human and not a computer.  Ted Williamson gave an example of a 2x2 ending and questioned what if opponents couldn't decide a draw but explained it was in
fact a draw but if applied to a clock it was a time clock race.  We voted on: (if to use a clock or let Frank judge the ending).  Judgment won 25 - 4.  More review was explained by Davis concerning a player may request their 1st game completed by the referee's decision so
	their 2nd game of that round starts on time for equal time & fairness; a 3 point bye round would be awarded as the first bye, thereafter to the lowest opponent; only two points per multiple byes will be awarded; if a player is 15 minutes late, then the game will be forfeited;
if a player is 1 hour late or more, then both games will be forfeited; 4 points for a forfeit (2 per game). Repairing in Swiss rounds would be use only if necessary in the last round and only one time.  Tournament Director
decided because of the number of participants in Masters and Minors, they
would play a Round Robin,  the Majors would play Swiss. Late Friday evening	the Majors and Minors voted to play an extra round Friday, leaving only two rounds to be played
Saturday. We appreciated the donations and
	contributions

which totaled $2,880.00 for the total cash prize fund, which was displayed on the bulletin board indicating all donations and fund
amounts. Pay-Out is a few dollars more than posted prize fund because Frank	rounds up to whole $ during pay out.  This is the richest tournament on
the checker circuit excluding possibly the ACF Nationals. There was a Regions Bank Poster displayed in the bank's foyer
and also in the tournament playing room. Hugh & Peggy Burton attended the tournament. Wives and player friends attending were: Sue Tucker, Mickey Webster, Paralee Shultz, Shirley Lerum, Mary Davis, Mary Morville, Carol Estes,
Sallie Tucker, Susie West  and  others I probably missed. We were served KFC Fried Chicken with all the trimmings and a variety of Hamburgers from Sonic and McDonald's for Lunch Friday. We had an assortment of Pizza and Tacos for Lunch on Saturday.  There was coffee,
bottle water, juice, soft drinks, etc. in the refrigerator available through out the tournament.  We appreciation the convenience of not having to leave the building for plenty of great food
for lunch.  You were well fed at Strawberry! We appreciate Frank Davis, Tournament Director and Referee in addition to Mary Davis, scorekeeper who did a fantastic job as usual. We really appreciate these well run tourneys and also John Acker for reporting
the results in a timely manner on the ACF forum and on facebook via google drive documents.  John posted the Strawberry scoresheets on the the ACF forum &
gave this link: (documents). West Tennessee Strawberry Festival has a nice
    2013 West Strawberry Festival Webpage

    and they published a Strawberry
Festival event brochure. Most players enjoyed at least a couple good dinners with special friends at either Old Country Store in Jackson (Buffets/Cafeterias), Barnhill's Buffett - Pollard's favorite buffet, and Kappis Steakhouse across from
Deerfield Inn, Humboldt, TN, or Barbeque at Reggi's BBQ in Jackson, TN. There are so many fine restaurants in the Humboldt / Jackson area. A delightful tournament & wonderful fellowship was had by all who attended.
		Congratulations, John Estes!
		Congratulations, John Acker!

		Congratulations, Bryce Morville!
