Saturday, November 29, 1975 - The Sanford Herald - Duels hotly contested - “Crafty checkers pushers vie for title”

An article on 1975 Southeastern Checker Tournament at Palomino Restaurant & Motel in Sanford, NC held over Thanksgiving weekend (We/Th/Fr/Sa).  Clint Pickard sponsored this tourney with free rooms for all entrants and a Thanksgiving dinner for player & wives.  Elbert Lowder jumps to the lead by beating his arch rival Ed Scheidt by Wednesday afternoon the first day of the ty.  Both are past State and Southeastern champions. Wednesday, trophies were presented to the state junior champion Tim Laverty of Durham and runner-up Ronald Spivey of Sanford.
