• Congratulations! IM Dr. John Webster of Stoneville, NC for winning the 2012 Alabama Open Tournament. | Congratulations! Don West of Mayfield, KY as the new 2012 District 5 Champion.  | Congratulations!  Larry Pollard of Brilliant, AL who continues to dominate the Alabama State Championship.  This 2012 State Championship Title makes his fourteenth time. | Congratulations!  Roy Harben of Guys, TN is the 2012 Alabama Open & District 5 Majors Champion. 
• Larry Pollard - District V Mgr. / Tournament Director with Frank & Mary Davis as - Referee & Scorekeeper had 17 players to register, representing 6 States: 5 from TN, 4 from NC, 3 from AL, 2 from GA, and one each from KY, LA, & MS.
• We call this tournament “The Basil Case Memorial” in honor of the late Basil G. Case from Russellville, a fitting tribute to this checker Grand Master Legend.
• Frank Davis welcomed all players and visitors at the opening of the tournament business meeting. This annual Alabama State Fifth District event makes the 7th continuous year at Haleyville at the Galley Restaurant, which has a suitable meeting room. Galley is the town's social and business hub for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.  Haleyville Civitans meet there every Tuesday, others like the Lions, Business & Professional Women's Club, Riding for Christian Motorcyclists Association, Haleyville Bass Anglers also meet there. 
• Mr. "Bicycle" Bittinger was introduced and presented us with some history and news about Haleyville.  Bicycle Bittinger, past mayor, mayor pro-tem, and now Haleyville councilman usually makes an appearance at our tournament opening business meeting, and this was no exception.  Bicycle had "City of Haleyville" ballpoint pens and other hand-outs to welcome our players.  Mr. Bittinger gave us a warm welcome and thanked us for choosing Haleyville again as our tournament venue.  He opened with invocation and talked about Haleyville as a small city of 5,000 with a big heart, and famous for the first 9-1-1 call in 1968.  There is new growth of businesses in Haleyville, a new Subway next door, for example, and the approval of land for a Super Wal-Mart complex to be built soon.  The  Emergency Shelters were completed following the destruction of last year's epic tornado outbreak in Alabama. A year after the onslaught of dozens of twisters killed over 250 people in Alabama and elsewhere in the South, federal researchers completing a study of who died and where they were when it happened. Among the conclusions so far:  Nearly half of the people who died had been advised to take shelter, and indeed most of them did, but the structures were not safe and the tornados destroyed everything in its path.  Haleyville Council accepted the FEMA grants for a tornado safe room at Neighborhood Facilities Building. This will be the City's third.  Bicycle invited us to participate in their Haleyville Lions state playoff Friday night, and the Veterans Day Parade in Haleyville Saturday, November 10, 2 PM.

• Frank mentioned the loss of our most recently deceased tournament players:  Bill McClintock of Greensboro, NC, James Atkins of Julian, NC, Gayle Helterbrand, of Cabool, MO, Ed Bruch of Amherst, New York,  Earl Sweatmon of Kaufman, TX and Earl Harvell of McKinney, TX.  He mentioned, we have lost so many we need  to discuss how to replace these checker players.  Some ideas where offered to help recruit new players and bring youth to our game.  A few suggestions were to give a book or checker set to introduce a player to ACF and tournament checkers. Someone mention when playing on the internet to mention we have tournaments to internet players when there is an opportunity.  This opened up the subject that Frank and Larry have a nice stack of old checker books from Rick Callaghan's library who died 2/8/2011.  They were offered by his wife, Mary Lynn to be given away to anyone who wanted them. 
• Frank covered the the tournament schedule, rules, time limits, & cash prize.  |  We played a Masters and Majors Division tournament using 7 rounds of Swiss pairing for the Masters and 7 rounds of Round-Robin for the Majors. We used the 3-Move 156 ballot deck, with only last round repairing if necessary. 2 hour rounds, allowing 1 hour per game. Only a 5 minute time allowance for over time rounds with a 1 minute per move for 5 move, then Referee will judge any unfinished games as a draw or win to stay on schedule.  |  A bye is awarded to the lowest point player as 3 points, and multiple bye get only 2 points.

• We thank Larry and his daughter Kelly for the delicious buffet deli trays.  Kelly arranged our Saturday's buffet by having Subway cater it from next door. We thank Larry & Kelly for the preparation and serving lunch and refreshments throughout the tournament. Ken Shultz's wife Paralee made some delicious brownies which she brought to the tournament.

• T separates player's opponent from player's accumulated game points. (win=2, draw=1, loss=0, bye=3) GM stands for Grand Master, CM stands for Candidate Master, IM stands for International Master which are earned titles given to distinguish a player's status by WCDF.  |  B for bye, P for pass, F for forfeit, WD for withdrawal and those withdrawn players drop to the bottom. Ratings are from ACF, Before and After Ratings are the results of a player's rating before this tournament and after it was recalculated from this score-sheet by ACF rating processor, Joe Moore.

• Most of the tournament players took time to sign two sympathy cards: one to Frances McClintock for the loss of her husband Bill; and the other to Maxine Helterbrand for the loss of her husband Gayle.  Another get well card was signed and sent to Shirley Lerum who is sick and hospitalized.

• At least six wives attended with their checker playing husbands: Paralee Shultz, Mary Davis, Mickie Webster, Christina Daniels, Susie West, and Sue Tucker.

• Webster drove 590 miles, and the Stanleys & Smith drove nearly as far at 560 miles to Haleyville.  |  Clifford Daniels age 82, dob: 12/8/1929 and Trey Stanley age 17, dob: 4/5/1995 were the oldest and youngest players.

• The Total Cash Prize: $1,880.00 = Entry Fees $340 ($20x17) + contributions & donations.

• Jim Mayhall with the Northwestern Alabamian was there Friday morning getting a newspaper article and their photographer took many shots of the tournament. An article was published in the Saturday paper and I hope to include their follow up article which will be in next week newspaper.

• We decided Friday evening the Masters would play their scheduled 4 rounds Friday and the Majors would play an extra 5th round Friday, leaving only 2 remaining rounds Saturday.

• Haleyville is a city in mostly Winston county which on June 1, 2010 Haleyville citizens voted to become the first city in Winston county since prohibition to allow the sale of alcohol, thus Haleyville now has a "night life" with a bar and a weekend country & western band at Galley Restaurant. Galley serves good country cookin, buffet lunch & dinner, large portions, and reasonably priced with fast service and friendly waiters.

• This was a fun tournament, weather was nice, sunny, and two cool Indian summer days, a delightful tournament & fellowship for all who attended!
