2015 Texas State & District 8 Tournament
District 8 contains States: Arkansas, Kansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas and their District 8 Manager: Elbert Jones
The Texas Tournament will be held June 5^th & 6^th (Friday & Saturday)

The Texas State and District 8 Open Checker Tournament will be held June 5th and 6th, at Baymont Inn & Suites, 2313 SE Loop, Carthage, TX 75633 (903)-694-9075. (map) (baymontinns.com) Registration at 8:00 a.m., a short business meeting at 8:30 am, with play starting at 9:00 am on Friday, and 8:00 a.m. on Saturday. Doubles or King $61.99 + tax if we rent 8 rooms, so clarify you are a checker player; otherwise, $68.99. Amenities including free continental breakfast, free Wi-Fi, outdoor pool, gym, business center, and meeting room.

Seven rounds will be played, with four 2 hour rounds played on Friday and three 2 hour rounds played on Saturday. Unless other plans of play are made at the Business Meeting. The entrance fee is $25.00 and ACF membership is required. This is an American Checker Federation Sanctioned Tournament; therefore, ACF Membership is $40.00 yearly. This may be paid at registration. Elbert Jones was elected President of the Texas Checker Association, and Manager of District 8 in the 2014 Texas annual business meeting. He will also coordinate the TX/D8 Tournaments as Tournament Director.

Congratulations! to CM Albert Tucker from Minden, Louisiana who finished in 1st place and won the tournament, but not being a Texas resident or from District 8 the title goes to the next contestant that is the highest finishing State resident and the District 8 title to the highest finishing District 8 player.

Congratulations! to Hugh Hawkins from Howe, Texas who played an outstanding tournament! He is recognized at the 2015 Texas State Champion and District 8 Champion. Hugh did not lose a single round while being matched against 1700 and above players.

Congratulations! to Stephen Graham of Odessa, Texas who tied with Elbert Jones from Carthage, Texas for third place.

Elbert Jones, D8 manager opened the 2015 Texas business meeting by welcoming seven players and lead the group in open prayer and bless the tournament.

A decision was made to play a round robin tournament with a 2 point bye.

GM stands for Grand Master, IM for International Master, and CM for Candidate Master, which are earned titles given by WCDF to distinguish accomplished players.

"T" separates player's opponent from player's game points for that round. Draw is 1, Win is 2 points, Bye is 2, and Forfeit is 4.

We appreciate Pam, Elbert Jones' daughter who did an outstanding job with score keeping.

The tournament entry fee of $20 was collected at registration, and it was announced the individual players were responsible for their ACF membership, because this was an ACF sanctioned Texas & District 8 Tournament.

We definitely appreciate Mr. Joe McDaniel from Tulsa, OK who sent us a $300.00 contribution. This and the entry fees of $140.00 (7x$20) made up the prize fund and tournament expenses.

We awarded a 2015 Texas State Championship trophy and a District 8 Championship plaque. Other tournament expenses included playing room, food & drinks, etc.

Did you notice Quint Hodges won a his round with Steve Graham and drew Wayne Maass? These six players are going to have a shoot-out next year!

Albert Tucker finished up with his bye round and took two draws Saturday because of health reasons and needing to get back home, but still won a $100.00 and the tournament. He donated his cash winnings back to next year's prize fund. Everyone enjoyed the tournament and loved the new venue at Baymont Inn & Suites in Carthage, TX.

We offer a big thank you to Elbert Jones, our District 8 manager for his efforts at organizing and directing this event.

Panola Watchman, the newspaper of Carthage the county seat of Panola Co. and surrounding counties of East Texas did an article on District 8 checker tournament held.

We also want to thank Elbert Jones and daughter Pam and all the other individuals who helped with the tournament and provided the delicious lunch both days.

Elbert Jones and Pam furnished a wonderful meal of sliced brisket with all the trimmings, including coconut and chocolate pie.

Elbert Jones reported the 2015 Texas State & District 8 Tournament results via phone 6/6/2015 at 2:26PM. 7 players, 7 rounds of Round Robin, with Albert Tucker from Minden, LA as the overall champion with 18 points, Hugh Hawkins from Howe, TX had 17 points, and won the District 8 and 2015 Texas State Championship, and he received $100.00, a nice trophy, and plaque for his efforts. Elbert Jones from Carthage, TX had 16 points, and tied with Steve Graham from Odessa, TX with 16 points, Wayne Maass also from Odessa, TX had 11 points, and tied with Lester Binnick from Huston, TX with 11 points, and Quint Hodges from Ft. Smith, AR (Huntington) with 9 points. We especially appreciate Joe McDaniel for donating $300.00 to our tournament. Albert Tucker finished up taking two draws Saturday because of health reasons and needing to get back home, but still won $100.00 but donated it back to next year's prize fund.
