2015 Alabama Open & District 5, Haleyville, AL - November 13 & 14

The 2015 Alabama Open Checker Tournament & District 5 (States: AL, KY, LA, MS, TN) will be held in Haleyville, AL November  13th & 14th - Friday and Saturday at Imperial Inn Haleyville, 1250 11th Avenue, Haleyville AL 35565 (Special rate $39.95 + tax for DB) 205-486-5205  Russ Patel - Manager.  Playing Room is in the Galley Restaurant at 1260 11th Ave. 205-486-9620.
The Motel and Restaurant are beside each other so its a short walk from your room to the tournament. A good number of player arrive Thursday and play practice games; however, registration is 9-9:30AM Friday Morning followed by short business meeting. Tournament Starts at 10:00AM


2015 District 4, Lexington, NC - November 6 & 7

This year the tournament dates for the District 4 (States: FL, GA, NC, VA, WV) are the same as always. It is the first weekend in November (Nov. 6 & 7). This will be played on Friday and Saturday and will be at Gethsemane Baptist Church Fellowship hall. There will be 8 rounds of 2 games each (1 opening) using the 156 deck openings. Scoring will be by games…2 points for a win, 1 point for a draw. It looks as if the prize fund will be at least $2,000.00.  If we only have one division, as in the past, first prize will be $500. Entry fee will be $25.00 and registration will be 9:00-10:00 AM on the 6th.  A short business meeting is scheduled following registration.  Play will begin at 10:00 AM sharp Friday. There will be 4 matches played on Friday and 4 on Saturday.  We start of 8 AM Saturday with a two hour time limit per match. There will be no break for lunch. We will play right through so that the players can get back home as quickly as possible. I have not yet set up a place to stay for this year, but as soon as I find out I will let you know. 2015 District 3 / Pennsylvania State - Oct 17 & 18

The 2015 District 3 / Pennsylvania State tournament will be held on October 17th & 18th at the Monroe Heights Hotel in Grove City, PA 16127 (2049 Leesburg-Grove City Road) . Registration will be from 7:30 AM to 8:30 AM with a business meeting to follow from 8:30 AM to 9:00 AM. ACF membership will be required for entrance into the tournament. Membership may be paid on site. The entry fee for this tournament will be $20. Play will begin at 9:00 AM on Saturday and 8:30 AM on Sunday. There will be 7 rounds with 2 ½ hours per round (time-clocks will be utilized). Provided ample attendance there will be 2 divisions, majors and masters which will be determined by ACF ratings. In the event that there is not an adequate number of participants in a division, a decision will be made during the business meeting. Pairings will be determined by round robin if there are 8 players in a division and Swiss method if there are more/less than 8 players. There will be a half hour break between each round and an hour break for dinner after round 3. The tournament will conclude with a recognition and awards for tournament winners and participants from approximately 5:00 PM to 5:30 PM Sunday evening.

Monroe Heights Hotel has offered a group rate of $54 / night plus tax for a room with one queen sized bed and continental breakfast. There are plenty of sit down restaurants and fast food restaurants nearby. This hotel was used in past District 3 / Pennsylvania State tournaments under the name Microtel. THE KENTUCKY CHECKER TOURNAMENT will be held (Saturday and Sunday), October 10 & 11, 2015 at La Quinta Inn, 1751 Lexington Road, Richmond, Kentucky 40475 (map). There will be 7 rounds of two games each - four rounds Saturday beginning at 8:00 AM; three rounds Sunday, same start time.  A block of rooms will be held until Sep 20th, 2015. 81st Illinois 101 Counties Open - Oct 3 & 4

81st Illinois 101 Counties Open will be held in Illinois Star Centre Mall Food Court on October 3th & 4th, 2015 and sponsored by the Illinois State Checker Association. The Illinois Star Centre Mall is located west of the intersection of Interstate I-57 and IL State Highway 13 (Exit 54B). Travel west on IL 13, about a ½ mile to enter the mall. The mall is located at the third stop light west of the interstate exit. Turn right at this third light and to the back of the mall toward the Target parking lot. Park in the lot before Target and the door will lead to the food court where we will be playing. The food court entrance is on the north side. A recommended hotel is the Super 8 Model at 2601 De Young, Marion, IL 62959, phone 618-993-5577. Please indicate that you are there for the tournament to receive a room discount for checker players of $45.60 (single & double) plus tax. 2015 Ohio State Open, Marriott Courtyard, Willoughby, Ohio 44094 - September 12 & 13 

Prize fund will be approx. $1000. Format is 7 rounds (3-move restriction) starting Saturday morning, (register 9:00-9:30am, begin play approx. 9:30am), and finishing with Rounds 5, 6 & 7 on Sunday. The 3-Move World Title Match between GM Michele Borghetti and GM Lubabalo Kondlo will be held in Livorno, Italy on Monday, August 31st through Sunday, September 13th.  Referee is Alan Millhone.


Cedarock -"Preserving Our Heritage Festival" - August 22

The Burlington Checker Club will participate in the Alamance Co. Cedarock Park - "Preserving Our Heritage Festival"  Saturday, August 22nd, 2015  9am - 5pm  The annual festival will feature demonstrations of turn-of-the-century skills that were typical on a farm of that era including blacksmithing, log hewing & using hand tools and techniques for debarking logs and squaring timbers, butter churning, soap making, quilting & much more. Antique tractors, Auto, & "hit & miss" engines will be on display. Old-time children's games including checkers, sack races & egg toss. Food & drink concessions are available. Live music all day featuring Buttermilk Creek, playing bluegrass and gospel. Come out & enjoy this fun, family-friendly event. Yes, Checkers and Beekeeping will be there!  We will be the first two exhibits you will see as you pass through the main entrance. We are set up on the right side beside each other. We will have our 2016 NC State Open Checker Tournament banner on display and the checker players' tent set up beside the Alamance Co. Beekeepers. There should be plenty of tables, chairs, boards, and checkers so by-passers can pick up a game! or try their luck at playing a state champion!


Annual Mid-Ohio Checker Meet - August 21 & 22 

The Annual Mid-Ohio Checker Meet will be held at Crist & Rosanna Miller's home at 10250 S. Kansas Road, Fredericksburg, Ohio 44627 (map).  Friday & Saturday, August 21st and August 22nd.  Registration opens at 12:00 pm, we will begin at 1:00 pm the evening of the 21st and continuing into Saturday. The time was move up so a planned cook out could supplement the tournament. This year we play 3-Move, we switch every other year between GAYP and 3-Move Restriction.  We will play 8 total rounds of Swiss (1 1/2 hours per 2 game rounds) as 4 rounds Friday and 4 rounds Saturday with play starting at 8:00am on Saturday. We will play inthe large building on the right side of Crist & Rosanna Miller's home. Tournament entry fee is $20.00, and any donations are appreciated to help defray expenses. Webster from Stoneville NC, a master checker player at 3 Move, 11-Man, and particularly in Go-As-You-Please or Freestyle Checkers, and a 45+ years supporter of the ACF and our game. Webster GAYP National Tournament Honoree” Checker Tournament will be held on (Monday thru Saturday) July 27th thru August 1st 2015, at the Comfort Suites in Lebanon, TN 37090. 2015 Whitley County Fair Open Checkers Tournament - July 18th 2015

The 2015 Whitley County Fair Open Checkers Tournament will be held in Williamsburg, KY on July 18th at 3-R Ranch & Arena on 625 Watts Creek Road, Williamsburg, KY 40769. And one of the oldest continuous Checker Tournament in the country...  A Southern Tradition!  The first Southern States Checker Tournament was played in Atlanta, GA on 9/10 -12, 1908 and won by F. B. "Captain" Fishburne from Columbia, SC.  It is held yearly since, and sanctioned by the American Checker Federation.  Usually scheduled close to the 4th of July weekend, Friday thru Sunday.   RESULTS


2015 US Youth GAYP National - June 22

2015 US Youth GAYP National will be held in gym at Nativity Academy at St Boniface, 529 East Liberty Street, Louisville, KY 40202 (map)  (502) 855-3300 | Monday, June 22, 2015 |  4:00 pm to 5:30 pm.  Michael Holmes announced that Dr. Harbolt has agreed to have the USA GAYP Youth National in their gym. Every child will receive the ACF brochure and tournament date (June 22), time (4pm to 530) with specific prizes to be listed.  Participating youth will receive certificates and trophies.  Charles Walker donated board and checker sets as well as funding in addition to support from the ACF. This is a Catholic School which Michael Holmes has been teaching checkers at on Mondays. Any other donations would help.  Brochure to go internet and Kentucky wide next week. The “Nativity Academy at Saint Boniface” Louisville, KY is hosted checkers on Monday afternoons.  The Youth Checker Club will meet weekly, every Monday. We play checkers in a supportive environment to improve knowledge and skill as well as fun and friendship. We will also have ACF Sanctioned Youth Tournaments. Contact: Michael Holmes or 502-767-2725. You don’t want to miss this one!  We will have a social period on Thursday, June 18 from 1 p.m. until 9 p.m. You may register for the tournament then or the next morning before the first round. Entry fee is $20. We will play four rounds of 3-move and 4 rounds of 11-Man Ballot. Three rounds will be played on Friday, June 19, three rounds on Saturday, June 20 and two rounds on Sunday, June 21. The first four rounds will be 3-move and the last four will be 11-Man. The Texas State and District 8 Open Checker Tournament will be held June 5th and 6th, at Baymont Inn & Suites, 2313 SE Loop, Carthage, TX 75633 (903)-694-0075. Registration at 8:00 a.m., a short business meeting at 8:30 am, with play starting at 9:00 am on Friday, and 8:00 a.m. on Saturday. Missouri State 3-Move & GAYP Open - April 25 & 26

The Missouri State 3-Move & GAYP Open Checker Tournaments will be held Saturday & Sunday, April 25th & 26th 2015 at the East Hills Shopping Center / "Food Court," 3702 Frederick Avenue, St. Joseph, Missouri 64506 (map)  (816-279-5667).  George Stallsworth decided to combine both tournaments this year as: 3-Move, Saturday and GAYP, Sunday.  Registration will begin at 8:00 a.m. and play starts at 9:00 a.m. on both days. Entry fee $10.00 for each tournament. There will be a $710 prize fund for the 3-Move Tournament and $500 prize fund for the GAYP Tournament. Thanks again to Joe McDaniel’s huge and generous contributions of $500 to each tournament. Taco Johns, The Kabob, Chinex, and Lino's Pizza are all located in the food court. There are plenty of nice comfortable chairs with tables in the court, and including a TV and wi-fi in the area. The Texas Road House and Five Guys are also located in the parking area. We will need to enter the mall on the west side between J.C. Illinois State - March 28 & 29

The 110th Annual Illinois State Checker Tournament will be held Saturday, March 28th and Sunday, March 29th, 2015 (because Easter Sunday falls on April 5th) in Marion, IL, at the Illinois Centre Mall food court. A recommended hotel is the Super 8 Motel at 2601 De Young, Marion, IL, 62959 (map).  phone 618-993-5577. The Super 8 is located to the left off the first stop light West of Exit  54 B coming off the Interstate I-57.  Room rates are $52.00 plus tax.  The Illinois Centre Mall is located West of Intersection I-57 and IL State Highway 13 (Exit 54B) Marion, Illinois 62959 (map), (mall map). Travel west on IL 13 (W Deyoung Street) about 1.5 miles to enter the mall. The mall is located at the third stop light west of the same interstate exit. You turn right at this third stop light and go to the back of the mall toward the Target parking. Park in the lot before Target and the door will lead to the food court where we will be playing. The food court entrance is on the north side near Target. Registration on Saturday begins at 8:00 a.m. with play beginning shortly after a 9:00 a.m. business meeting. Tennessee State Open - March 6-8

The 2015 Tennessee State Open Checker Tournament will be held on (Friday thru Sunday)  March 6 - 8, 2015, at the Comfort Suites in Lebanon, TN 37090. (map) NOTICE THE CHANGE IN LOCATION!!!  The hotel is located on Highway 231 (904 Murfreesboro Road) near I-40 (take exit 238 north off I-40 ramp and make left turn onto US-231 N / S CUMBERLAND ST / TN-10 N, back across I-40, hotel on right). For reservations at Comfort Suites, call 615-443-0027 (cost $69.95 + Tennessee Tax 16.24% = Total $81.31 per night) or at Econo Lodge (map), located 829 S. Cumberland Street, 615-444-1001 (cost $49.95+Tennessee Tax 16.24% = Total $58.06 per night)  and tell them you are a checker player.  Please call before February 19, 2015 for reservations; otherwise, rate is $120.00. WTM 11-Man Ballot (Laverty vs Moiseyev) - January 16 - 19

The World 11-Man Ballot Match between GM Alex Moiseyev, current World 11-Man Checkers Champion from Dublin, Ohio and IM Tim Laverty, challenger from Graham, North Carolina is scheduled to play a 16 game match on January 16th - 19th, 2015. Dates are Friday thru Monday, with the option of possibly playing an additional 4 games (tie breaker play-off) on Tuesday, January 20th if an even score after 16 games. This 11-Man Ballot WTM will start 10:00 AM at the Econo Lodge in conference room 245 as the designated playing room on the 2nd floor. Opponents are scheduled to play 4 games each tournament day and finish their 16th game Monday evening (Martin Luther King's Day). The public is welcome to watch this match provided they show respect and quietness to the competing opponents. The local news media is also invited. North Carolina Checker Association is sponsoring this World Title Match which is sanctioned by the American Checker Federation and World Checker Draughts Federation. JR Smith and Teal Stanley will serve as the official referee/scorekeeper. All games will be recorded and published. Travis Weddle will serve as media specialist. He will webcam the games and use UStream to video the games to internet so the public can watch this WTM. Tim Laverty won his position by a tie on game points with Joe Moore, Jr. of Levittown, PA but earned 9 more honor points for his 2nd Place Finish. This will be IM Tim Laverty's fourth attempt to de-throne World Champion GM Alex Moiseyev.
