Joe McDaniel gave $300 to our prize fund

Congratulations! To World Champion GM Alex Moiseyev of Dublin, Ohio who won the 2016 11-Man US National Tournament. GM Alex Moiseyev won the title in 2008 and has defended his title five times since then form National winners or runner-up challengers.

Congratulations! To GM Jim Morrison from Glasgow, Kentucky who was our 2016 2nd Place 11-Man Ballot US National runner-up, and earned the privilege to challenge the Champ to a WTM.

Teal Stanley, NCCA President welcomed 7 Masters and 7 Majors players to the 2016 11-Man US National Checker Tournament. Teal gave our opening tournament invocation and follow with discussion on schedule and general tourney rules, which most of the players were familiar with. Swiss pairing and only one repairing if necessary amongst Masters. Major or Minors players prefer repairs as oppose to being repaired with a much higher rated player and having to "play up" just so a Master doesn't play more than one repairing. Start time and round times were posted on the bulletin board as Tournament Schedule. We had 14 players from 6 states: 8 from NC, 2 each from KY an OH, and one each from IN and SC.

JR Smith, Tournament Director mentioned we had clocks, 11-Man decks, and recorder game sheets available and encouraged Master players to record their games and turn them in. He also mentioned that we had plenty of food and drinks & water on the back tables and in the refrigerator. He also announced a Papa John's Pizza Party was planned for Saturday evening at 5:00 PM.

We appreciate Joe McDaniel, Teal Stanley, JR Smith, and Alex Holmes for donating to the prize fund which totaled to $785.00 including entry fees or $280.00 (14 x $20), and we also appreciate the pizza and birthday cake provided by JR Smith and Teal Stanley.

Players were welcomed to Econo Lodge Hotel, 2133 Hanford Road, Burlington, NC by a nice office desktop display announcing "Welcome ! 2016 11-Man US National Open Checker Tournament"

We recognized Alex Holmes as the youngest player who will be 17 on February 28^th, Grover Minor as the oldest at 84 ½ with his birthday on July 14^th, and Michael & Alex Holmes and Jim Morrison traveling 9 hours one way as longest distance of 525 miles from Louisville, Kentucky. Alex Moiseyev and John Acker traveled close to this distance from Columbia and Dublin, Ohio.

We recognized several checker players' birthdays with a "Happy Birthday Checker Players" cake Monday morning. We also announced Jeff Webster's 50th birthday party Friday evening January 22, 2016 in Stoneville. Both of these were posted on the playing room wall Saturday. Jeff's birthday party was postponed to January 29th because of the snow storm.

John Greene from Liberty, NC visited us on Monday, meeting the players and we hope he starts back playing tournament checkers.

GM stands for Grand Master, IM for International Master, and CM for Candidate Master, which are earned titles given to distinguish players by WCDF.

ACF Ratings - updated after this tournament and new ratings supplied by ACF ratings processed by Joe Moore will later appear in the after ratings column.

"T" separates player's opponent from his game points for that round and the = from his accumulated game points. Win is 2 points, Draw is 1, Bye is 3, and a Forfeit is 4.

Some players enjoyed dinner Sunday evening with Tim Laverty as one of his favorite restaurant, the Harbor Inn Seafood Restaurant, a popular eatery for an excellent meal & fellowship.

We appreciate Tim Laverty as our official referee and scorekeeper, and also appreciate Econo Lodge Hotel, our venue for keeping coffee available, providing us an adequate playing room, and excellent service.

An 11-Man Deck & System Poster Board was displayed at the tournament and the 11-Man Time Line.

We will submitted all recorded games to Jim Loy so he can review, correct, verify, and annotate them for publication.

A delightful tournament & wonderful fellowship was had by all who attended!
