BRIAN ANDREW POOLE - 1944 TO 2025
Brian was born during the Second World War. He lived in the centre of "old
Poole", Dorset and attended schools there. His family had lived in the town for
some 200 years but were displaced by re-development in the 1960s. Leaving school at only 15 years he had a number
of jobs until taking a position as a civilian at the Royal Marine Base in
Hamworthy, Poole. Brian stayed there for 40 plus years working his way up to
Chief Steward grade. He was well liked at work and awarded the MBE on retirement. There was a ceremony at Buckingham Palace and Brian actually got to
shake hands with the late Queen Elizabeth II.
Draughts (in USA Checkers) was a life long hobby from childhood. As an adult he
found out about Tournament draughts in the UK and of course USA. Brian discovered the English Draughts Association (EDA) and joined contacting members
for games. It took much study to come up to their level and Brian was pleased to have won the English Amateur Shield in 2005. He was even Honorary President for
a time.
Draughts wasn't his only hobby. Brian was a keen supporter of Poole Town
Football Club. The Club like many other clubs has had its ups and downs over the
years but he was always keen to attend matches home and quite often away, too.
There was even another hobby - music. This was mainly from the Rock and Roll era
and went to many live concerts.
Somewhere along the line he found time to get married to Sarah and they spent 49
years together. They were lucky enough to have a son Andrew and even more
blessed to have a grandson Ruari.
About 18 months ago Brian was diagnosed with cancer but with the expert
treatment now available led a normal life until he spent his last week in the
Forest Holme Hospice in Poole.
Brian and Sarah were longtime ACF members, and Brian served as President of EDA
(English Draughts Association) for a number of years.
