Clarence “Waldo” Barton lived on 3502 Sunnycrest Avenue, Greensboro, NC with his sister, Lila L. Barton. Waldo's sister was 6 years older and he took care of her. He stop playing tournaments in the late 90's but we stayed in contact and he talk about checkers and offer help and study materials. He mailed me a memory scheme on how he remembered the 32 squares. Waldo was a NCCA Lifetime member. Here is a group picture of him at a Southeastern in 1980 in Sanford, and he won the NC State Open Major Division twice, in 93 and 95. I also have a crosstable of one of his last tournaments in 1997. Waldo moved to Kernersville a few year ago so he could be closer to his great nephew “Chuck” his younger brother Charles' grandson Charles III, who looked after him. He suffered a bad fall and needed assisted care in 2010. Chuck arranged it so he was at the same center where his sister Lila lived at Piney Grove Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Waldo and his sister Lila were very close throughout their lives. He was there near 9 months before dying. He sister Lila died just two months later, April 19 and lived to be over a 100 years old. Here are two pictures, both taken at Sunnycrest Avenue.
