Mike Garvey of 1242 Seven Lakes North, West End, NC 27376.  Died Sunday morning, June 21, 2009.  He Mike Garvey - 08 NC Open.jpg (57300 bytes)was one of our newest life-time members of North Carolina Checker Association.  Mike was the perfect gentleman, whether it was a win, loss, or draw when it comes to this wonderful mind sport.  He was always happy, upbeat, and a pleasure to be around.  Mike played in the 2008 11-Man National, 2008 Carolina Open, 2008 Burlington 11-Man, and our District 4.  These were his last four tournaments.  We will miss Mike as a checker player and his friendly fellowship.  Mike was liked and loved by all the players who knew him through the North Carolina tournament circuit.   We offer our prayers and sympathy to the Garvey Family and their friends.

Michael Joseph Garvey, Sr. age 70 of Seven Lakes, NC… died Sunday June 21, 2009 at First Health Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst, NC. Mr. Garvey was born September 25, 1938 to the late Michael J. Garvey and Mary Ellen Malanephy Garvey in the Bronx, NY.

 

A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00AM Wednesday June 24, 2009 at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Pinehurst, with the Rev. James M. Labosky officiating. Rite of committal will be in the Seven Lakes Cemetery at a later date.

 

Mike was a loving and giving husband, father, grandfather and friend.  He was active in the community as an adorer at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church and 3rd degree member of the Knights of Columbus.  Mike was a man you could depend on to be there for you in any situation.  He helped deliver food for meals on wheels and he enjoyed painting water colors and volunteering to help at many events for the young and old alike.

 

Mr. Garvey is survived by his wife of 49 years Marie Caldiero Garvey of Seven Lakes, NC; a son, Michael Garvey and wife Debra of Matthews, NC;  two daughters, Nancy Allen of Charlotte, NC; and Doreen Collins and husband Jack of Sloatsburg, NY; Also, twelve grandchildren He was predeceased by a sister Mary Ann Garvey.

 

A Vigil for the Deceased will be held at Boles Funeral Home in Seven Lakes on Tuesday June 23, 2009 from 6 to 9PM.
