We lost a fine checker player and very good friend last Saturday. Some of us knew him in person and others from king's room on the zone but he was well liked and loved by all who came to know him. Below is his obituary from the paper. from Mike
Boyd Allen "Cowboy" Simpson
ELON — Boyd Allen "Cowboy" Simpson, 74, of 3066 Gwynn Rd., died
Saturday, June 12, 2004, at his home after a lengthy illness.
A native of Alamance County, he was the son of the late Boyd Russell
Simpson and the late Margaret McCray Simpson and was
married to Mrs. Alice Faye Bradshaw Simpson for over 47 years. Mr.
Simpson was a former tobacco farmer, a U. S. Army Veteran serving in the
Korean War and associated with the
Disabled American Veterans. He was a member of Bethlehem Christian Church, the
Burlington Moose Lodge, the Alamance Beagle Club, and the Burlington Checker
Club.
Mr. Simpson was a loving husband, daddy, paw-paw, and brother. He is
survived by his wife of the home; a daughter, Judy Simpson Thompson and her
husband, Kirk, of Swepsonville, two grandchildren, Katherine Anne Thompson and
Paul Allen Thompson; three sisters, Mrs. Iris S. Workman of Burlington, Mrs.
Betty S. Boone; and Peggie S. Foster and her husband, Lester, all of Elon;
sister-in-law, Mrs. Alyse M. Simpson of Elon; five nieces and five nephews.
His parents and two brothers, Nathan McCray Simpson and Mack Dwight Simpson,
preceded him in death.
The funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 PM Tuesday, June 15, 2004, at
Bethlehem Christian Church by the Rev. Dave Gilbert. Interment will follow at
Alamance Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at Lowe Funeral Home
and Crematory from 6-8 PM this evening and other times at the home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of
Alamance-Caswell, 914 Chapel Hill Rd., Burlington, NC 27215 or to Bethlehem
Christian Church, 3625 Altamahaw Church St., Elon, NC 27244.

Cowboy was one of
the first of a small group that started playing at the Burlington Checker
Club in the spring of 2000, a student of Old 14th and other gambit variations of favorite GAYP openings which he loved to play and share. He played our Greensboro and Burlington Tournaments obtaining an ACF rating of 1653 in 2003.
