Congratulations to GM John Webster and IM Tim Laverty who were the Open Co-Champions of the 2011 Virginia Open with Tim having 3 more honor points and Ryan Pronk for winning the 2011 Virginia State Championship. Ryan was the top finishing Virginia player therefore distinguishing himself for the State Title. President Buck Smith recognized Ryan Pronk as the State Champion to be entered into the Virginia State Champion Winners Roster. GM stands for Grand Master, IM for International Master, and CM for Candidate Master, which are earned titles given to distinguish players by WCDF. Buck Smith - Tournament Director & Referee/Scorekeeper opened Friday morning's business meeting. The chairman of Old Dominion Checker Association welcomed 19 players, 11 from NC, 5 from VA, and 1 each from OH, PA, and WV. Officers remain as: Buck Smith as President and Ted Taylor as Vice-President, with Buck continuing as State Tournament Director for 2012. We voted to play a single class of Swiss with only a last round re-pair if necessary, lowest player gets the bye, and repeat byes awarded 2 points only. JR Smith mentioned Bill McClintock was down in his back and couldn't attend, Lovetta Currence is very sick, which kept the Taylors away, and Kathleen Pierce, Wayne's wife who had a stroke Wednesday keeping Wayne from attending. All the players signed the get well cards to be mailed out so they know we missed them and offer our prayers for their recovery. T separates player's opponent from player's accumulated game points. (win=2, draw=1, loss=0, bye=3) Ratings from WCDF July/September 2011 - No. 8. Bill Salot gave out his sheets with two checker problems and whoever  were the first 4 players to correctly solve either problem would win a classic checker book. Tim Laverty and Vic Habgood each won the first two books, Tim chose as his prize Oldbury's problem book, "The Hand of D. E. O.", 1947. Vic received "Fantasy of Kings" by J. Charles 1970. Several other books left over were raffled off Saturday evening which Raleigh Johnson won "Modern Magic No 7A" by J. Charles 1970 and Neil Wenberg won "Chequer Charoscuro" by Derek E. Oldbury 1966. Mike Ross brought a bag of muscadines & scuppernongs for the players to enjoy, as well as a large bag of pecans, both were a hit with the players throughout the match. The Total Cash Prize was $444.00 We appreciated the $20.00 donations by Tim Laverty, Travis Weddle and Joe Weaver which were added to the cash prize fund. We welcome Travis Weddle back to VA Tournament Checkers after not playing since 2000. Travis Weddle and Victor Habgood donated their cash winnings back to 2012 VA State Open prize fund. This was a fun tournament, a house full of excellent checker talent, weather was two wonderful cool Indian summer days, and many players enjoyed dinner and fellowship in Bedford Friday evening. Everyone had a great time!
