In news closer to home, Dan and I came across a story in the neighboring Cabool Enterprise that Gayle Helterbrand of Cabool won the Missouri State Checker Tournament in Wentzville recently and is the state champion checker player for 2006.

We didn’t even know there was a Missouri checker champ, much less one who lives nearby.

Apparently, Helterbrand and his wife, Maxine, have entered checker tournaments since 1973, traveling to several states and Canada for tournaments.

Personally, I can’t even win at checkers playing “give away.”
