Saturday, July 21, 1973 The News and Observer - "Yes We Have a State Champion"
After two nice articles back to back in the Charlotte News and Observer (July 7, 1973 The Charlotte Observer -“Checkers Champ Retains Crown Right Moves” and July 12, 1973 The News and Observer -“State Champion - Checkers is His Game” Mr. J.W. Wilson of Fairmont, NC wrote a letter to the Charlotte newspaper forum July 17, disputing Elbert Lowder's claim as the NC State Checker Championship because Lowder had not defeated him, which was published on the 17th of July. Angus M. Simpson immediately responded by writing a letter to the News and Observer and also sending a copy to Mr. Wilson. Mr. Simpson's letter was published July 21, and Mr. Wilson wrote Angus back which Angus Simpson included Wilson's letter with his to Elbert 7/30/73. (all three are below) Fairmont is in Robeson Co. just a few miles SW of Lumberton, NC. We will never know if Mr. Wilson could play checkers or just talk...
