Davis of Rose Hill, VA won the tournament and new District IV Champion, with Tim Laverty of Sanford, NC as second place runner up.  February 1989 Carolina Country Magazine - Official Publication of R.E.C. featured this tournament and checkers in general of recent times.

ACF District 4  The U.S. Tourney Champion Paul Davis of Rose Hill, VA won the 1988 ACF District 4 Open held Oct. 28-30 in Ahoskie, N.C.  Tim Laverty was runner-up, and next were Ed Bruch, Norm Wexler, Quinton East, Les Balderson, Earl Luffman, and Vic Defenderfer through the top 8.  Merle Vaughn, Ahoskie, won the Class B tourney by Honor Points over runner-up Herman "Buzzy" Odom, Aulander, NC.  Following were P. Brown, I. Hinson, R.Whitley, F. Walls, C. Lowe, and W. Holder through the top 8.  There were 31 entrants - 14 in "A" and 17 in "B".  Cecil Lowe of nearby Colerain was the generous host and promoter for the tourney.  District Manager Clint Pickard asks that interested promoters send him bids for the 1989 tourney - P.O.
