119th Annual North Carolina State Open Checker Tournament
The 2009 North Carolina Open Checker Tournament
at the Masonic Home for Children at Oxford,
NC
May 15th &
16th
2009 (Friday & Saturday)
The 119th continuous North Carolina State Checker Tournament was opened by welcoming 30 players, representing 6 states: NC, VA, KY, TN, IN, and WV. At least 8 more interested locals and surrounding area checker players dropped by over the course of the two day tourney to chat and play pickup games but didn't enter the tournament. Several of these were pool checker players. Masonic Home for Children at Oxford was a gracious host by providing Friday lunch and a nice large playing hall in York Rite Memorial Chapel. The Chapel is located on a beautiful campus with lovely enormous 100 year old oaks. Mr. Allen Hughes and Chris Richardson greeted NCCA and its checker players at the opening ceremony. Mr. Hughes gave an impressive presentation on the Masonic Home for Children at Oxford which has a rich history from their founding of the home to its current status and mission. Pastor Larry Michael and our ACF District IV Manager gave the invocation before starting our 1st round matches. On Saturday, most of the players took a visitors' tour through the Cobb Center at Dunn Cottage with Mrs. Tina Gilreath as our museum guide. The tour included a pictorial and narrative history lesson about St. John's College from 1853 to the present facility. Those that visited the museum would agree this is the crown jewel of MHCO, a treasure of history, pictures, memorabilia, and artifacts, dating back to 1873. You can't leave this place without a spirit of giving, kindness, and a hope for humanity. Thank You, MHCO for hosting our tournament.
