John Acker emailed this file Saturday, August 16, 2014 at 9:28 PM with the following text: Here are the results from this weekend's mid-Ohio checker meet, held in Fredericksburg, in the heart of Amish country. Crist Miller hosted and directed the event, and I provided technical assistance with pairings and results. For more info on the event, see JR's page: http://nccheckers.org/NCCA/2014%20Mid-Ohio%20Checker%20Meet.htm.  Congratulations to our top three winners; John Webster, Teal Stanley, and Laverne Wray. First prize was a hand-crafted checkers clock (courtesy of a local merchant), and second prize was a new set of Crisloid checkers (courtesy of Roger Blaine). Crist and his family provided meals and arranged lodging for all the players, and we all enjoyed their hospitality. John used ChessArbiter and selected a different formula as a tie breaker. He set it to break ties using "better result with the best opponents," which is different than just totaling one's opponent's scores. For instance, he played the top three finishers, but didn't get a draw with any of them. Under the traditional honor points formula he would benefit from that result, but under this one it may actually have hurt him as you see below using the old method of total game points of his opponent per round, minus the lowest total for a player's honor points score.

At our 12:30 PM pre-tournament meeting, Crist Miller, director of the 2014 Annual Mid-Ohio Open Checker Meet warmly welcomed 18 checker enthusiast from 4 different states. Crist Miller covered the playing rules, tournament schedule, and discussed what amenities and lodging was available. Crist introduced the players to each other, his brother John, and family. There were also pre-printed game recorders available.

We played 4 rounds Friday which Crist announced they had a campfire party planned after the 4th round.  Everyone was invited to meet his family and friends around the fire and enjoy some music, singing, and the evening stars.  Lloyd Auker a gifted vocalist and accordionist entertained us with Amish folk, hymnals, and classic gospel songs. Abe Keim assisted Lloyd in the evening entertainment by some great yodeling. John Miller, Crist's brother had the fire blazing when we arrived.  It was cool that evening with overcast skies. The crackling fire, glowing embers, flying sparks brought back childhood memories. This is a simple but rich way to enjoy and bond with family and friends.  In addition to the log fire they had a 5 foot ash log standing up right. John had cut slots from the top to near the trunk of this 18 inch diameter log, so it burned like a chimney with flame and sparks shooting out the top.  You could really feel the heat and see the embers inside as it burned.  We left the party around 10:00 PM.  When I got back to the hotel I could smell the wood smoke in my clothes and hair.  This was something I haven't done in years. What an enjoyable time you can have around a fire!  The next morning I could still smell the wood smoke so I washed it away but kept the wonderful memories.

We finished our 4 rounds Saturday and of course we enjoyed delicious entrées and meals both days. Mrs. Rosanna Miller knows how to host an excellent checker tourney by providing tasty appetizer nibbles and delightful hors d'oeuvre throughout the event.

Scenic Valley Store had some good deals which several players took advantage of discounted items they wanted.

Crist mail out a thank you letter, an attendants list, and next year's Annual Mid-Ohio Checker Meet Flyer.
