• Congratulations! To GM Alex Moiseyev from Dublin, OH as the 2016 Tennessee State Open 1st Place Masters Finisher.  Congratulations! IM Larry Keen from Halls, TN as the as the highest Tennessee Masters Player and recognized as the 2016 Tennessee State Champion which makes his 9th time winning this title.  Larry was awarded an additional $200.00 Tennessee State Player's Cash Bonus for his performance.  Congratulations! GM Jim Morrison from Glasgow, KY as 2nd Place, Clayton Nash from Columbus, MS as 3rd, and Alex Holmes from Sellersburg, IN as 4th Place.  IM John Webster from Stoneville, NC was 5th Place.

• Congratulations! Byron Woolum from Walker, KY and Dallas Ramsey from Pine Hill, AL as First Place finishers in the Majors Division and separated by honor points as their respective positions in the 2016 Tennessee State Open Majors Division. Congratulations to Larry Atwood from Minot, ND as 3rd Place and Jerry Atkins from Monticello, KY as 4th Place.  Congratulations to Mike Choate from Madisonville, TN as fifth place and also awarded an additional $100 bonus for being the highest finishing Tennessee Majors Division player and recognized as the 2016 Tennessee State Majors Champion.  Congratulations to Jeff Webster of Stoneville, NC and Elmer Donelson from Coeburn, VA as 6th Place Finishers in the Majors Division. Congratulations to Glenn Fuquay of Elon, NC as 1st Place  and J.R. Smith from Greensboro, NC as 2nd Place in the Minors Division.  Congratulations to Woolum, Minor, and Rice as 3rd, 4th, and 5th Place finisher in the Minors Division.  

• Frank Davis opened the tournament by welcoming a field of 34 players from 12 states that registered to play. There were 9 entrants from KY, 7 from TN, 6 from NC, 2 each from AL, VA, & WV, and 1 from each from OH, IN, LA, GA, MS, & ND, which included 6 ACF & WCDF grand, international, or candidate masters, and 6 more soon to be titled master players participating for the ≈ $5,000+ of prize funds. There were at least 2 other checker players (IM Anthony Bishop from College Grove, TN & Steve Watkins from Clarksville, TN) who visited and observed tournament play.

• Players were welcomed to Comfort Suite - Lebanon by a nice front desk counter display sign announcing: Welcome!  The 2016 Tennessee State  Open State | March 4th -6th | Sponsored by Tennessee Checker Association.  Comfort Suite - Lebanon also prepared a 2016 Comfort Suites Display playing room sign.

• Frank Davis covered the Tournament Format, Schedule, and Playing Rules, and Prize Fund Payout Schedule.  The Friday evening Pizza Party was announced for 6:00 pm and all players, spouses and family were invited to attend.
• This year's large prize fund would not have been possible if not for the gifts from Gene Lindsay and Leonard Hickman.  You can read the specific details here: Leonard Hickman $10,000.00 gift and Gene Lindsay Fund.  Tennessee Checker Association (TCA) awards a bonus to the highest finishing Tennessee resident in each division in addition to the cash prize fund: as $200 Master, $100 Majors, and $50 to Minors. They also award a bonus to the highest TN Woman and Youth players at the TN State Tournament.
• All players received several nice door prize of some type which were supplied by several local merchants, Wilson County Visitors Center, Wilson County Chamber of Commerce, Wilson  Bank & Trust, and Cracker Barrel. We Appreciate Ken Christian who collets these door prizes from the local businesses and associations.
• TN State Open is one of the most consistent tournaments on the checker playing tourney circuit as entry fees remain at $25 for Masters, $20 for Majors, and $15 for Minors.  ($25x11=$275, $20x15=$300, $15x8=$120 for total entry fees of $695.00 + Contributions + Hickman's gift + Lindsay Fund = $5,348.00 Total Prize Fund.  Hickman's Gift is split between Majors 65% and Minors 35% and all entry fees collected by divisions are paid back to that division. We appreciate our tournament contributors.
• Frank Davis chaired the election of Larry Keen as Vice-President to replace Ken Christian as a TCA officer who need to step down because of health issues. We also had discussion and voted on overtimed game with Master to use KingsRow with 60 plus score to determine draw or loss to terminate an overtime game.  The computer decision won over tournament director making the decision or have another Master help make the decision so the tournament would stays on schedule.
• Frank Davis, president of Tennessee Checker Association (TCA) announced that the 2017 Tennessee State Open would be held March 3rd^rd thru 5^th at this same location, here at Comfort Suites, Lebanon, TN.
• Frank also opened the floor for players to announce their upcoming tournaments: 
• Illinois State Open - April 2^nd & 3^rd in Marion, IL at the Illinois Star Centre Mall food court;
• Missouri State Open 3-Move/GAYP - April 9^th & 10^th at the East Hills Shopping Center, St. Joseph, Missouri;
• North Carolina State Open - May 13^th & 14^th at the Econo Lodge in Burlington, NC;
• Texas/District 8 - June 3^rd & 4^th at Carthage, TX and the Southern July 8^th & 10^th at Lebanon, TN.
• US National is scheduled for the week of July 27^th thru August 30^th at the Honeysuckle Inn, Branson, MO (Calendar).
• GM Alex Moiseyev spoke about his up coming WTM in Italy and ask for financial help, as it seem, most players contributed to his cause.
• We welcome 89 year old Elmer Donelson from Coeburn, VA back to tournament checkers, I think his last tournament was in 1996 National in Danville, VA.  He plays at Play OK under “VA Fiddler.”  We also welcome back Paul Heavener who last played in the VA Open in 2006. 
• GM stands for Grand Master, IM for International Master, and CM for Candidate Master, which are earned titles given to distinguish players by WCDF.
• Our oldest player was Harvey Powell who was 94 November 22, and our youngest player was Alex Holmes who turned 17 on February 28.
• We appreciate Frank Davis, Tournament Director and Referee in addition to Mary Davis, scorekeeper who did a fantastic job as usual.
• Sunday service was an enjoyable one with Ted Williamson bring a messages about "Sin - the only problem man can't solve but Jesus Christ is the solution."  The Williamson Branch performed inspirational Gospel Music and as Frank stated it best as, “Precious.”   Williamson Branch Family offered the checker players a senior discount (2 DVD's for $20.00).
• Many wives attended:  Mickie Webster, Carolyn Minor, Mary Davis, Annie Webster, Shirley Lerum, Sue Tucker, Emily Ramsey, Bernice Powell, Paralee Shultz, Stephanie Woolum, Carol Heavener, Carol Williamson, Gladys Rice, and probably some I missed seeing.
• We collected a nice number of ACF membership renewals.
• Some of the NC players spent Thursday evening in downtown Nashville on Honky Tonk row on Broadway, enjoying country music,  “Holler & Swaller” and mingling with the crowds.
• Most players enjoyed at least several meals with each other at either Shoney's breakfast & lunch buffet, O’Charley’s, Cracker Barrel, Applebee's, Sunset, or Demo's.
• A delightful tournament & wonderful fellowship was had by all who attended!
