OBITUARIES
William Howard "W H" Amos
Mr. William Howard Amos, 96, of Greensboro, died Monday, Jan. 17, 2005, at Wesley Long Hospital.
Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hanes-Lineberry Vanstory Chapel. Burial will follow at Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery.
Born Dec. 20, 1908, to the late John Washington Amos and Rebecca Hennis Amos, Mr. Amos was a dedicated and faithful member of Shannon Hills Bible Chapel for over 65 years. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Army.
He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Mary W. Amos; daughters, Rebecca “Becky” Stone and husband Clarence and Brenda Steele and husband Kenneth; son W. Paul Amos and wife Sandy; sister Ora Smith; five grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren.
The Family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home and other times at Heritage Greens 801 Meadow Wood Street, Apt. 119, Greensboro, NC 27409.

Howard was a retired paint contractor, who live in the Glenwood section of Greensboro. He won a Greensboro tournament some years back and held a 1753 ACF rating in 2000. Amos would set up the Greensboro, Saturday mini-tournaments, and also was responsible for the Greensboro Checker Tournament until Bill McClintock took it over. They both worked on the 1997 National held at Howard Johnson Inn in Greensboro, and W.H. organized the 1977 State Tournament in the Friendly Shopping Center. Amos & Mary sold their home place and lived out the remainder of their lives at a rest home in Greensboro, NC. Mr. Amos is in this group Southeastern picture.
